The author of Killing Us Softly, Jean Kilborne, talks about the ads that make women think they should look a specific way in order to be considered good looking. Even though male ads can have a similar affect on men by showing males with good bodies, those ads are not nearly as scrutinizing as the ones for women. The media makes women insecure about themselves because they are forced to compare themselves to the models on television, the internet, magazines, etc. Media doesn’t only try to take control of what women should buy but also what they should look like. Thus, telling them that what they look like now is not perfect or good enough.

  1. This is s good summary of Jean Kilborne's view. I would like to add to this summary about what media does to the society. Besides trying to control how women think about their bodies, the media also try to change the way we all think. Advertisments are made to try to sell us a product or a belief. What I have learned in other classes is that agents(TV stations) are there to serve thier money making clients(advertisers). The Media will sell you what their clients want to sell you because the media is ultimately funded by the advertisers. Thus the media really tries to alter the society as a whole and Jean Kilborne just concentrated the aspect of them targeting women.
