In the article The Art of Watching Database, Geert Lovink argues that YouTube shortens viewer’s attention span since it has created a search based way to entertain its viewers for hours by watching a short clip rather than watching a 60+ minute movie or tv show.
In the article The Practices of Everyday Media Life, Lev Manovich states that today’s media content has extensively become unprofessionally produced rather than professionally generated which media corporations such as YouTube encourage since it presents them with new strategies and tactics.
Both of the authors agree that there has been a shift in media from the masses being merely the consumers to them being now also the producers. This means that consumers don’t just watch whatever is presented to them anymore, instead they search through the media they have produced themselves for what they want to watch. Therefore, they no longer rely on the professionally produced videos. And since media corporations’ (such as Google) main interest is making money, they easily adapt to the needs and wants of the consumers to keep them satisfied and insure that the users will keep using their services.

Good points. But the article talks about how this isn't completely so everywhere yet, that in Indian villages they won't be creating their own media with one cellular phone. So how would corporations reach those audiences?
ReplyDeleteTrue, it does say that that's how it is right now, however, it also states that this will change over time.
ReplyDeleteYeah I suppose. But you'd think that big companies would also be trying to aim for those audiences, for they make up a great part of the world's population too.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure they're looking for ways to do so but at the moment their infrastructure would cost too much and it's easier to concentrate on the more advanced society.
ReplyDeleteCould be. But at the same time, building up their infrastructure and creating a more modern world there would be beneficial to corporations looking for new audiences. But I guess time will tell.
ReplyDeleteyeah and i'm sure there's not much of a hurry to target them since for the mean time there's plenty of consumers.
